for the vast majority of the year, Provence is bathed in the most glorious southern sunshine, with a warmth and intensity of light unknown in other parts of France. Along the coast, the Mediterranean reflects and refracts the sun's rays, making for sharp, distinct colours. Inland, the hues are more subtle: the red roof tiles and blue skies are softened by an infinite variety of greens and by the looming presence of limestone hills, often wrapped in a gentle haze.
